A summer night at ancient Gortys right next to Lousios river. Dark sky with twinkling stars. Rushing water roar. Crickets and night owls. Dew. Calm and cozy yet so mystic.
Here was the sanctuary of the youngest of gods, the god-physician Asclepius (Asklepios), protector of human health and personal happiness. An important healing centre 27 centuries ago.
People with physical or mental illness came here for spiritual treatment and to propitiate the gods, since gods gave the disease. There was no formal medicine treatment. These healing centers, called Asklepieion, were the last resort for patients that formal medicine had no cure for.
The awe-inspiring natural beauty and scenic grandeur of the setting, the spas, the rituals and hypnosis, all had their positive effect on patients.
We had a nice sleep!
