There’s a magnetism that attracts people towards the beach. A sense of peace, calmness , a state of unity and satisfaction with life in the moment. This innate relationship with the sea reaches far back to the roots of our origin.

Snow, ice, fog, clouds, rain, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, waves. All are forms of the most omnipresent substance on Earth: water. Its reaction with light is diverse. It can be transparent, translucent or opaque and it can cause diffuse or specular reflection. Humans are inspired by water, in fact they consist mostly of water themselves.

Gialova is a small coastal village in the Bay of Navarino. The harbour is formed by a long, rocky island (Sphacteria) running along the coast.

The first thing we saw at Skoutari bay was a long and shallow beach with a tavern. Further along was an inviting turquoise sandy beach. And another one…  and another one…

Maleas means noise, clamor. It’s a cape that causes fear and terror to sailors and is considered amongst the most dangerous capes across the Mediterranean. Cape Maleas or Cavo Malias greatly inspired writers since the dawn of history and literature. Elafonisos, meaning “the island of deers”, was an important hunting place in the ancient times. Small red deers used to live there.  The ancient traveler Pausanias, reported Elafonisos as a peninsula. He also noted there were many sanctuaries in the area devoted to the goddess of hunting, Artemis.

Spring is the perfect season for exploring Peloponnese. During the last week of March, we visited Kotronas, a seaside village at eastern Mani. It was a wonderful experience. Wild flowers, clear blue sky, warm weather.

The Frankish princess welcomed the sun rising over the Argolic gulf every morning. Her castle, built on top of the hill, offered a panoramic view of the area. This magnificent native oak forest of Foloi or Pholoe, has been given its name by Hercules himself. It’s that old! Folos (Pholus) was Hercules’ friend and he was a centaur. Centaurs were guys half human and half horses that used to live in this forest.

After spending a beautiful night  at the Asclepieio of Gortys we decided to join Rennate and George, a German couple we met the day before, for a morning hike at Lousios gorge. Christos went fishing trout at the river.

A summer night at ancient Gortys right next to Lousios river. Dark sky with twinkling stars. Rushing water roar. Crickets and night owls. Dew. Calm and cozy yet so mystic.

The spirit of a place is more or less what the observer effect reflects upon it. This is especially true for the Peloponnese, where an uninterrupted human activity for millenia, has left the marks of man’s eternal struggle for survival and for understanding the world.
